CALA Homes Case Studies - Jordanhill Campus, Glasgow

Jordanhill Campus is a development of 95 units, including the conversion of existing buildings and the introduction of a contemporary new product featuring the best in home technology and sustainable specification.

Jordanhill Campus is located approximately 6km to the west of Glasgow City Centre. The university grounds extend to circa 23 hectares (56 acres) and the CALA residential development covers approximately 5.7 hectares (14 acres).CALA has provided three distinct housing types and architectural forms, which reflect the varying site characteristics. The proposal for the site includes a total of 95 units.

CALA has had to work closely with the University of Strathclyde throughout the entire process and significant public consultation took place to inform the final design areas.

The site itself is split into 2 distinct areas and access to the second site was problematic. However, CALA managed to find an alternative access solution which was favoured by the planning department and gave an advantage in the bid process.

Examples of issues that were addressed by the CALA project team include:

  • Topographically difficult site.
  • Piloting a new, more sustainable, contemporary product.
  • Conversion of existing buildings.
  • Working around to an operational University campus.

Skills used throughout process:

  • Innovative design of a unique product specifically for this locale.
  • Project management of 2 separate sites at one time.
  • Managing a main contractor.
  • Complying with a strict development brief produced by the University and the Council.
