Benson C of E Primary School receives a helping hand from CALA's Community Bursary scheme

Friends of Benson C of E Primary School (FoBS), a Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) in South Oxfordshire, has received a welcome boost from CALA Homes, after receiving £2,300 in funding to help enhance the school’s outdoor forest area.

The group of around 50 active members comes together throughout the year to organise social and fundraising events for children and the community. It aims to enhance the educational experience of all Benson C of E Primary School pupils and their families, raising funds to further the school’s investment in the provision of an excellent education, both inside and outside the classroom.

FoBS was chosen as a recipient of this year’s CALA Community Bursary, a scheme which launched in February 2018, inviting organisations, charities and groups in Oxfordshire to apply to help fund projects which make an important difference in the community.

Using the funding, FoBS has been able to develop the outdoor forest area with new equipment, games and musical instruments. The area will be used as part of lessons to support all areas of the curriculum and also for pupils to enjoy at their leisure during lunchtime.

Jo Whittaker, Committee Member at FoBS, comments: “We are thrilled to have received this funding as part of CALA’s Community Bursary. The outdoor forest area has been extremely popular with pupils and the funding has allowed us to develop this area and further enhance the learning and play environment.

“All of the 208 children we currently have at Benson will benefit from this funding, as well as all of the new families that will move to the school after the current CALA Homes development is complete.”

Helen Colman, Sales and Marketing Director (Chiltern), said: “After receiving many amazing applications for a range of worthwhile causes, we faced an incredibly tough decision when selecting the final successful groups for the Community Bursary initiative.

“We are committed to supporting the local communities and, as such, we are delighted to support The Friends of Benson C of E. The work that the charity does to raise funds for the school and provide children with a fun and educational experience really stood out to us. We were really pleased to be able to provide funds for the new outdoor equipment and hope it encourages more children to enjoy spending time outdoors.”

CALA is committed to making a positive and lasting contribution to the communities in which it builds, through an active programme of local charity donations, community support and sponsorship. In 2018, the Community Bursary scheme will grant more than £100,000 in funding to over 100 community causes across the UK.
