Greg Watson - Commercial Manager

CALA Homes (North) LTD

What qualifications / previous experience do you have?

I have an MSC in Quantity Surveying and over 20 years’ industry experience within the UK and Europe.

What does your job at CALA involve?

I lead, manage and develop the commercial team at CALA Homes (North). We are heavily involved in the development of new land opportunities through to live projects, including testing their viability and contributing to an optimised design scheme, producing project parameters to make decisions around investment, and overseeing the procurement and commercial management of trade contractors.

We also ensure processes are in place and maintained to allow for the business key dates to be achieved, whether these dates relate to the purchase of a site or handover of a property. I also oversee the buying function for the business, ensuring that we achieve value for money in a timely manner.

What is your role’s biggest challenge?

Managing expectations can sometimes be a challenge. I am often the realist in the business attempting to strike a balance between the vision and the practicalities to develop a solution. This often requires real collaborative working and problem solving.

What is the best thing about your role?

I love seeing projects come to life. It can often take a long time to develop a project from an outline sketch to achieving the first legal completion however there is much satisfaction in witnessing this process being successfully executed.
