Katie - Land Buyer
CALA Homes (North) LTD
What qualifications / previous experience do you have?
I achieved a First Class degree from Heriot Watt University in BSc (Hons) Urban Planning and Property Development. Throughout university, I worked part time at an estate agency in Edinburgh, and also undertook internships to compliment my degree at a local authority and a planning consultancy in London. This gave me a real insight into the wider property sector and the different roles on offer after University. I am currently working towards submitting my RTPI L-APC with a view to become a Chartered Planner.
What does your job at CALA involve?
The role is very varied and offers the opportunity to be involved in the initial identification of a site and bid process, to the conclusion of contracts, and through the design and planning process. Key to this is collaborating with the wider CALA team, landowners, agents and local communities to create a shared vision for a development.
As part of the Land team, we also need to look at the needs of the business both in the long and short term to ensure we are able to present viable new residential opportunities.
What is your role’s biggest challenge?
Every land opportunity and site is different and the challenges we encounter are never the same. It is key to be able to work alongside the wider team collaborating to identify a solution, whilst balancing everyone’s different priorities and expectations which can be, at times, quite a challenge.
What is the best thing about your role?
Over the past two years, it has been a really exciting growth period within the North region, with the launch of key developments across Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire. It’s also been a real learning curve for me, particularly having moved from Edinburgh and being new to the City and the house building industry.
It’s really exciting to see sites at all different stages of the process and allows you to appreciate the hard work that it takes from every member of the team to bring developments to fruition. It is always satisfying to know you have contributed to a development being able to start on site with the Construction team.
Do you have any career advice for someone looking to work for CALA?
Show that you are willing to learn and take responsibility and be proactive. For someone in the early stages of their career, it has been really encouraging for me that all members of the team are willing to share their experience and knowledge to help you learn and improve.
What are your CALA Homes aspirations?
I hope to continue to see the growth of the North region and the launch of new developments which offer unique opportunities for buyers in Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire, whilst continuing to develop my own personal career within the house building industry.
