Ross Maclennan - Land Director

CALA Homes (North) LTD

What qualifications / previous experience do you have?

I received my MA degree in Property and Spatial Planning at Aberdeen University before working on the Local Development Plan team at Aberdeen City Council.  After building up several years of planning experience, I became part of the team at CALA Homes in Aberdeen where I’ve worked with the Land team for seven and a half years.

What does your job at CALA involve?

The main part of my job involves sourcing, securing and managing land opportunities for new and current developments for CALA - we are always on the lookout for new land opportunities across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire. I then work with the team to gain all the necessary consents to allow developments to move forward. I also have a role in the direction, management and performance of the North business.

What is your role’s biggest challenge?

The sector is ever changing, which is a challenge in itself, but one that is exciting to take on and adapt to. I would say that managing expectations and third parties can be challenging at times on the land side of the business, but collaborating is also one of the most rewarding elements.

What is the best thing about your role?

The role brings with it a great deal of variety where most days raise different challenges. I also get to meet lots of different people, in a variety of locations from a number of backgrounds, which keeps each and every day interesting.  It’s also fantastic to see a new community and homes being realised after so much hard work from the very early stages.

Do you have any career advice for someone looking to work for CALA?

I think it’s important to get your name out there and meet as many different people as you can. People at CALA are encouraged to have their say and to get involved, so it’s important that people feel confident in sharing their ideas. Lastly, be honest and give your best. CALA Homes is a great company to work for and looks after its employees through good and challenging times.

What are your CALA Homes aspirations?

I enjoy learning all aspects of the business from my peers and senior management in the North team and the wider group.  There’s still so much to learn, however I’m always keen for the next challenge and to see what the future brings.
