Sophie - Site Manager
CALA Homes (SHC) Ltd
Sophie Redman started her career in the admin office of a London construction company 10 years ago. She is now the site manager for CALA Homes’ Farriers Rise development in East Sussex, where she is responsible for the delivery of 21 new homes.
With an unrivaled passion to succeed in a male-dominated area of the industry, Sophie is flying the flag for female construction workers.
What does your department do?
As a site manager, I am responsible for delivering high-quality homes to approved plans. I also coordinate the ordering materials, scheduling and managing the programme of work, as well as overseeing subcontractor partners and dealing with any snagging issues. Health and Safety is our number one priority at CALA and it is also my role to ensure that my site is run to the very highest health and safety standards.
What do you do on a day-to-day basis?
No two days are same! When I arrive on site the first thing I do is a full walk-around, where I catch up with the various teams and ensure they are all safe and complying with our health and safety standards – for example, ensuring they are all wearing the required PPE for their role.
I then go into all of the homes under construction and review the progress made the day before. I consult my actions lists and sense-check where we are in terms of delivery.
It’s then back to the site office where I’ll be managing any issues, having meetings with subcontractors and generally overseeing the activity on site.
What do you like about what you do?
Everything! I enjoy the pressure of completing a development to a deadline and how fast-paced the role is. I enjoy working as part of a team to bring something to fruition and I love seeing the development come together, from the first home, to the launch of the showhome, to the landscaping and pavements being laid.
I also enjoy meeting prospective owners, and showing them around the site. Seeing them happy in their new home is the reason we do what we do.
Why did you choose this career?
I wanted to have a career that I was proud of, where I could create something that stood the test of time. At Farriers Rise, we’re building homes for families, and I love the idea of us creating something that will be a home for many generations to come.
What qualifications did you need to get this job?
In this industry experience is vital. In addition to this, the Construction Skills Certification Scheme Card, the Site Management Safety Training Scheme and first aid qualification are always necessary.
Is there any particular advice you would give to someone looking for a career in your area of work?
Get as much experience as you can in as many areas as possible, as this will serve you well as your career develops. And don’t be afraid of hard work or a challenge – this career is incredibly rewarding.
