Stephen Jarvie – Construction Director

CALA Homes (North) LTD

What qualifications / previous experience do you have?

I studied at Aberdeen College from the City and Guilds trade certificates through to achieving the ONC in Building. After this, I completed my HNC in Building at Robert Gordon University. As for experience, I served an apprenticeship as a bricklayer and worked self-employed for two years before taking up my first assistant Site Manager role with a housing developer in 1992.  I worked my way through the ranks to Development Manager in 2001 before working for a time as a Contracts Manager and then as a Director Designate.

I joined CALA in March 2011 as Construction Manager and was promoted in July 2014 and again, to Construction Director, in July 2015.

What does your job at CALA involve?

My role at CALA involves the key responsibility of leading the Construction and Customer Service teams in order to support the business in carrying its overall plan and regional strategies, as well as allocating, monitoring and controlling the Construction and Customer Service budgets.

I work closely with my fellow directors and senior managers across the commercial, sales and marketing, technical, and land functions providing support to them and preparing pre-development and construction programmes.

I need to ensure that our sites comply with all relevant Health and Safety legislation and CALA’s stringent health and safety standards. I’m also responsible for ensuring the CALA team delivers the customer service expected of a five-star builder by monitoring the service provided by the teams and providing direction to ensure all objectives are met.

What is your role’s biggest challenge?

We set very high standards when it comes to staff, contractors and other partners, so sustaining that is a challenge, but one we are committed to. Aberdeen is a relatively small market place, but CALA’s reputation for quality and service attracts the best, which certainly helps.

My ultimate goal is always to fully integrate all of our employees within the different disciplines to promote and provide a five star customer experience journey from start to finish of the process, from land acquisition all the way to the end of our customer warranty period.

What is the best thing about your role?

I love coming to work and being able to assist and nurture the growth of the CALA business and of its young North of Scotland team.  Working at CALA is still a bit like working for a local housing developer but with the support network of a major house builder, providing the best of both worlds.
The support we receive from our Group Board and Regional Board is fantastic with cross regional communication to share best practise and knowledge being very much encouraged.  There’s always something exciting happening at CALA and I believe in thevalues that are always at the centre of our culture.

Do you have any career advice for someone looking to work for CALA?

CALA Homes is the place you want to live and work and we provide the best platform to learn, giving all employees every opportunity to succeed. We foster a learning culture where team members own and drive their own continuous training. Our graduate development programme presents an amazing opportunity for graduates to put the knowledge acquired from their education in to practice.  We want to support every person to realise their dreams and aspirations and ensure they feel a part of something special.

What are your CALA Homes aspirations?

I’m keen to develop my team members to progress to more senior roles within CALA.  I hope to nurture talent and develop teams to grow within the CALA organisation, while adopting a consistent approach across all of our developments.

I would hope to continue to develop and expand my role within the CALA organisation as the business grows.
