A career with CALA is worth writing home about

CALA Homes Site Manager Dale Lamont reveals how on-the-job training can lead to a successful career path.

A site manager for one of the UK’s leading home builders has revealed how merging University studies with on-the-job training can lead to a successful career path – using his own career as evidence.

Dale Lamont, Site Manager with CALA Homes (East), undertook a full time Construction and Project Management BSc at Edinburgh Napier University, before switching to part time when he was offered a trainee position with CALA.

With the house builder’s support, construction enthusiast Dale was able to work and learn on site for four days during the week, while continuing his studies one day a week at University. He was then promptly promoted to the position of Assistant Site Manager after graduating in 2011.

Dale, who is currently working on his first site as a site manager - CALA’s The Meadow development in Currie - quickly progressed through the ranks as a result of being able to combine both paths.

Dale said: “The experience I gained from being able to work with CALA while simultaneously learning at University was absolutely invaluable. From dealing with staff and learning how to manage them, to dealing with people from different trades and engineering type backgrounds; the practical on the job learning was so beneficial.

“My studies gave me a good understanding into a number of disciplines which are essential for a site manager, including time management, process management and logistic planning, but the days on site gave me the practical insight into how things actually worked, rather than just getting this from a text book or website.

“This was all very refreshing and certainly set me in good stead for progressing within CALA.”

Dale would now like to see other budding site managers enjoying the same kind of career progression that CALA Homes has given him, and would recommend they follow a similar course.

Dale continued: “I have had many positive experiences during my time with CALA. One highlight in particular was the NHBC awards which we won for two of the sites I was working on. It was great to have our hard work recognised with such a prestigious achievement.

“I would definitely recommend this career path to others as the ability to have a practical and more tactile insight into the industry while studying was a great advantage. Being able to learn from actual site managers, contract managers and construction managers and directors on the job was a fantastic help throughout my studies and into my career.

“CALA Homes is always looking for new talent to join the business, and I would definitely steer others in a similar direction as I truly believe that the company is highly invested in its employees and the opportunities on offer are unrivalled across the property development and home building sector.”

CALA’s The Meadow, in Currie, where Dale is based, is an intimate development of 17 spacious three bedroom terraced and five bedroom detached homes from their award-winning Signature range. The properties have been designed with flexible family living in mind; each benefitting from large windows, the convenience of built in storage, en-suite bathrooms and private gardens.

CALA Homes is committed to investing in people and offers a wide range of opportunities, including Princes Trust apprenticeships, traineeships and graduate schemes.
