Community

At CALA we aim to build not just homes but communities. This starts as soon as we buy a piece of land. We adopt a collaborative approach to planning, taking into consideration the needs of local communities, local planning authorities and future homeowners to create the right development solution for the local area.

We engage early and give local communities the chance to provide feedback on our development proposals through public consultation programmes. All feedback is captured in a statement of community involvement, which is submitted with our planning application, and we always look to address any areas of concern wherever we can.

We build long-term partnerships during the life of our developments. Schools outreach programmes include presentations on site safety, educational visits to our sites and informing young people on the career opportunities in housebuilding. We get involved in local community events and support local initiatives.

Charitable partnerships

We have nurtured a four year relationship with the Prince’s Trust, a partnership which enabled us to donate and fundraise over £600,000 for the charity. CALA is proud to have started an exciting new partnership with Samaritans in 2020. Our programme of activity aims to support the charity’s vital work across the UK, while strengthening employee mental health and wellbeing within CALA.

Our strategy

As a key part of CALA’s Sustainability Strategy, we aim to enable our customers to live more sustainably in communities that support biodiversity. Through community consultation, our goal is to build community infrastructure into each of our developments that is beneficial for health and wellbeing, such as green spaces, landscapes and community buildings.

Our strategy includes targets to improve air and water quality on our developments, to produce a biodiversity action plan by 2022, and goals to reduce energy use and carbon emissions in CALA homes through low-carbon heating and electric vehicle charging points. By 2030, all homes produced will meet operational net zero carbon.
