Health and safety

The health and safety of our teams, the public and our customers is of the highest importance. We have robust processes and procedures in place and regularly train our teams to minimise the risk of incidents and injuries.

We work closely with both direct employees and our sub-contractor partners to promote a cooperative, partnership approach, vital in ensuring we continue to improve our health and safety record.

Our health and safety management system has been developed with ISO 45001 in mind, and includes our required standards, monitoring, staff training and management reporting. This is internally audited on an annual basis, as we move towards ISO 14001 accreditation. In addition to the routine checks carried out by site managers, we have a highly experienced HSE team who carry out on-site inspections and auditing. They also carry out coaching and mentoring visits to ensure our site-based personnel have a thorough and practical understanding of our HSE requirements. Our sites also have a monthly visit from a director, with a focus on engagement and behaviour.

Our environment management system has been written to comply with ISO 14001. Internal audits are conducted annually, with the intent of achieving ISO 14001 accreditation in 2024.

Whilst processes and procedures are important, we believe Cala will be a safer place to work if safety is embedded in our culture. Achieving zero RIDDOR injuries is our immediate goal, whilst our ultimate challenge is to establish a culture where people work safely, looking out for one another, so that no one suffers injury or ill health as a result of our activities.

Our annual event enables Cala to recognise and reward site management and their teams for excellence in HSE practices and reinforcement of our culture; One Team, One Goal, Safe Home.

One Team, One Goal, Safe Home

In 2019 Cala launched our health and safety culture change programme, the general ethos of which is encapsulated in our new work code, ‘One Team, One Goal, Safe Home’. The programme focusses on a number of areas including safety leadership and covers all areas of our business including office-based employees, site staff and our contractors.
