An East Dunbartonshire charity has received funding which will allow it to continue its work in the community, including the running of a local café for those affected by dementia.

Ceartas, an advocacy service which works with individuals with additional support needs, has received £1,000 from Cala Homes (West) as part of its annual community bursary scheme.

As well as providing advice and support to adults across East Dunbartonshire, the charity operates De Café groups for those living with dementia or memory loss, in a bid to provide social support and a place for people and their carers, partners and family to socialise.

The first De Café group was started in 2005 in Kirkintilloch, and additional groups are now also held in Bishopbriggs, Milngavie, Lenzie and Bearsden.

Last week, a special music-themed De Café was held in Kirkintilloch, where visitors were treated to afternoon tea and enjoyed music from a live band.

Gordon Thomson, Chief Executive of Ceartas, said: “The De Café groups are a huge source of support for people in the community affected by memory loss.  Whether it’s the person who’s actually experiencing it first-hand, their carer or their loved ones, it’s a great place to go to meet people going through a similar experience.

“Memory loss can be extremely isolating, so having somewhere to go and talk to other people who are in the same boat is really comforting.

“Thanks to this funding from Cala we’ll be able to continue helping people who are in need across East Dunbartonshire.”

Liana Canavan, Sales and Marketing Director of Cala Homes (West), said: “We’re delighted to support Ceartas through our community bursary scheme.  The charity does a lot of great work in the community and the De Café groups are a fantastic example of this.

“We hope this funding will allow the charity to continue offering its services which are invaluable to so many.”
